Hey Spidey,
Must just be the camera angle. My glass seat is 16" wide (incl. cheek plates) and probably only 18" long (but it has some "sub-lumbar" support). 16" long sounds pretty reasonable. My first carved seat was only 12" long, and it lacked under-thigh support. My butt went to the very back of the seat, too.
I don't know if you would have to go longer than 16", but I wouldn't recommend going any shorter.
3/4" below the lowest point sounds good, as well.
I just know what works for my butt, but everyone's mileage will vary. You just have to get out there and try it. If you're very comfortable for an hour or two--absolutely no soreness or numbness, you will probably be okay for a whole day. When I've had a seat that didn't fit, I was numb after 1/2 hour or 45 minutes.
You would think that softness is the best aid in comfort, but most comfort really comes from having a maximum posterior area supported. (I'm not advocating a high-fat diet to maximize your posterior, I'm saying support as much of the area you've already got!)
Sit in the boat with the seat. If the underside of your thigh doesn't really rest hard on the front edge of the seat, then you probably don't have to round it over more. If you can definitely make out that front edge after 5 minutes, then it will feel like a razor blade after 5 hours.
Happy sitting!
Shawn
: Hi Fellows;
: Shawn, it might only look that way because the minicell is 4" thick. The
: actual finished dimensions are 16" long x 23" wide. I talked to
: Joe about what he does, and this is the size he recommended. I wondered
: about the 16" dimension also, but it fills my cockpit the same as all
: pics I've seen of this type of seat. Would you have gone longer than the
: 16" dimension?
: And Nick, the depth of the seat is 3-1/4", leaving 3/4" of foam at
: the lowest point. I did not carve my thigh grooves very deep, but it seems
: comfortable when I sit in it on the floor. Perhaps to Shawn's point I
: should round the front edge more, which would also make it deeper there,
: more like everyone else's seat.
: I'm just not sure how it will feel over several hours - - I'm certainly open
: to proven suggestions that aid in comfort.
: Thanks & Best Regards, Spidey
