: Larry has it right. You can make your foam seat really thin. I've gone as
: deep as 1/4" from the hull at the thinnest spots. I glue the seat in
: with contact cement. The foam will hold up fine, but you get a more
: professional look and a good nonskid surface if you cover it over with
: speaker grill cloth. The grill cloth needs to be applied with a spray
: adhesive. There is no need to make a fiberglass seat. You can get the foam
: seat in lower, it will last as long or longer, it is lighter, it is easier
: to make. When sanding foam that is not going to be covered with fabric use
: Dragonskin. Cut it into a strip 2.5" x 1", and cut the corners
: round. Used between the thumb and forefinger you can make finely finished
: surfaces that look like suede, and you can work inside of concavities.
: There is a web site I can refer you to that goes into all of this in
: detail, but I can't remember the address at this instant. Email me if you
: are interested. I will have found it by then. best wishes, Ken
Ken,
My knowledge of foam seat building came from your article in Sea Kayaker Magazine.
