"Industrial Strength" Velcro

: Thanks for the compliments!

: Dale and Pete have asked what holds the seat in place - Right now nothing,
: but my intention is to Velcro it in with perhaps 4 attachment points. I
: think the shear strength would be more than enough to keep it from
: slipping - Do you have any thoughts on this?

I have used 2" wide, self-adhesive, "Industrial Strength" Velcro (from Home Depot) quite a bit. The adhesive that's on it doesn't hold up very well in a wet environment. The edges lift and curl, which lets dirt in to contaminate the adhesive. This progresses until the Velcro eventually comes loose. I've tried applying a patch of contact cement on the hull, then sticking the Velcro to that. This seems to be a bit more durable, but I still get adhesion failures. The best method I've found so far is to strip off the factory adhesive and contact cement the velcro directly to the hull. The adhesive can be rolled/peeled from the Velcro on one side (I can't remember which one), but generally must be removed with a solvent from the other (the hook and loop have different backing materials and the adhesives are different as well). It's tedious work, so if you can find the same product without adhesive, you're better off. One source I know of is Ragged Mountain Equipment in Intervale, NH. Perhaps fabric stores will have it as well.

I've heard of people attaching Velcro with epoxy, but I haven't tried it myself.
