I find that when sealing hatches, that having gaskets on opposing surfaces is effective. A good image for visualizing this would be an "O" ring pressing into a layer of softer, closed cell foam. Because the "O" ring is narrow and hard it forms a trench in the softer material. It doesn't take inordinate pressure to seal, which minimizes the risk of deformation in the hatch or deck (and the consequential difficult to fix leaks that result when the deck or hatch flexes to open gaps before the gaskets compress sufficiently to seal). One needn't necessarily use an "O" ring--just try to utilize the concept of a narrower seal penetrating a softer seal.
