I'm in strong agreement regarding the use of a backband, and regarding a kayak not being a "lazy boy" (you might want to take a look at the introductory section in my website "kayakfit.com" which discusses posture in the kayak. For athletic paddling the torso needs to be free to rotate, which means that the back support should be low, small, and not bearing with too much pressure. It is also desirable to have a low cockpit coaming in back with low back support in order to improve agility for bracing and rolling, most especially for doing a very low sculling brace. The body has to lay on the rear deck as flat as possible for the sculling brace to succeed easily and well. Unless the rear deck and back support are out of the way, it isn't possible.
