There are two alternatives I can think of:
Consider computer cut vinyl lettering. Most towns of any size have a sign company that can make you a computer cut vinyl lettering in size, color and font of you choice. These are usually very easy to apply and very durable. A single name in one color in our area is about $20. Ask the sign company about application techniques. We usually spray the area where the name is to be applied with water with a little Joy soap in it. Apply the name, scoot it around to where you want it and squeege it down. Let it dry for about half a day and peel the paper backing off. 7-10 years durability.
For an even classier look, hire a professional sign painter. Ask around for someone who does this on the side. In our area there are half a dozen people who do this REALLY well. It is an aquired skill, you will not be able to come close to what these people can do without a lot of practice. If you just let them do their thing, they can often free hand it with sign painters ink in 10-20 minutes and charge you very little ($20-$30?). 5 years durability. You can varnish over sign painters ink for increased durability.
