Kathy,
Here is a simple way to do it if you just want your boats name in black:
I printed out the name of my boat on my computer printer in a font I liked in the right size and used it to cut out a template with a razor knife. I taped the template to the boat where I wanted the name. I used a SANFORD Sharpie brand marker to trace and fill in the template on the epoxyed surface just a day prior to varnishing. The sharpie marker dried quickly and did not smudge when varnish was applied.
Seems too easy but it worked well for me. I wish I had a picture to post.
If you do this, make sure you go back and put on two to three coats of marker ink to get a deep black color. If you are skeptical, as I was, try a sample on a scrap of wood. That is what sold me on the idea.
G'Luck
Mike
Does anyone have any tips on how to go about painting a name on your boat?
: I've got a Pygmy Osprey Std that I just finished the epoxy coats on and
: will be starting on the varnish in a few weeks. The kit instructions say
: 'use sign paint before varnishing', but that's about it. Has anyone else
: done this? I'd love to see some pictures to see how it turns out.
: They also recommend using auto detail tape or electrical tape along the sheer
: line for decoration. Has anyone tried these techniques? Do you think it
: turned out well?
