Cockpit coaming

I've just about got the horizontal strips filled into the cockpit area of my Guillemot and was wondering if most of you glassed the deck before cutting out the cockpit and putting in the vertical strips?
I see from Kent's web page he did the horizontal stripping then just let the cloth drape over the opening and then cut it out after it set up a little.

From the pictures in the book it looks like Nick has gone as far as installing the vertical strips before glassing but in other photo's the deck is already glassed.

I'm looking for a little of the wisdom that comes from experience. Thanks for your help.
