: Do you start with the glueing of the strip around the middle of the boat
: lengthwise? Also, how long between dots do you wait? Have you had any let
: loose while curing?
When hot glue cools, it's pretty quick. It's hot and liquid for quite a while, but when it's under a strip, it goes from liquid to goo to solid fast. If you start to release pressure and it's not holding, push it back in quickly, and it will cool and hold.
: Also, how tough is the hot glue to scrape from a strip of cedar, redwood,
: pine, etc? Do you think hotglue would adhere more to some woods than
: others and be a PITA to remove?
It sticks more to cedar than redwood or pine. Cedar has the most open grain and more hot glue gets into the grain. I didn't have the hot glue pull off any wood grain from anything but cedar.
: Is it best to use a scraper or chisel or perhaps heated chisel to remove the
: glue blobs at finish?
No! Don't use heat--you don't want that stuff flowing into your wood grain. It comes off well with your fingernail or a scraper. A chisel might gouge your wood--be careful.
: Thanks for all the help. If I go full staple-less its gonna be your and
: Spideys fault when I'm not paddling until late 2001. Except using my
: Chessie 18.
Yeah, but it's soooo worth it!
: How would you rate this compared to stapled speedwise (half as fast?)
I used "clamped" staple-less, and it was probably 3x stapled speed. (When I consider that I couldn't strip large sections of the hull in one sitting) so it pushed the productivity curve down.
Happy Building
