So here's what I finally did. I first tried 320 grit dry. No go. then I put 240 grit on my mouse and did a real quick buzz over just the bottom of the boat. Then I decided to bag the whole sanding thing and added just one coat of finishing paint. The paint actually did a pretty good of knocking down all the fabric oddities and as for the stuff sticking up and away from the kayak... Oh well...

If I use canvas again, i'll go straight to paint. On my test canvas the paint went on smoother than either stain varnish or Boiled Linseed oil.
