The Aleuts didn't pass along their design rationale, so we are reduced to reverse engineering the few (hopefully representative?) boats they left behind. The only reason I have heard for the three piece keel was to enhance the flexibility of the boat. If true, this could have been for speed or for durability (my guess); either way, you might need a wave tank to get your answer.
