: 1) Yesterday I went into Lowes and they had a cheap 10" tablesaw on
: sale. Its a Delta Bench top but came with a stand. It cost $99.00. I know
: this is cheap and I know you get what you pay for but, it was cheap and I
: can use it to build shelves if nothing else.( my wife got it for me for an
: early christmas present).Does anyone foresee any problems using it to cut
: strips.
Hi Tom
You're right, that is definitely a cheap price even for a table top model. Could be it was damaged slightly, but, chances are the packaging was damaged or a piece is missing: as in some bolt or other for mounting it. Or maybe even the instruction booklet is missing. It doesn't matter what may be wrong, they can't sell it for the full price if it has anything broken, missing or if it's been purchased and brought back. I don't forsee any problems with lightweight cutting with it. Either strips or shelving. The table/top models are usually a bit small to do any real serious work. Sounds to me like you walked in on a good deal before anyone else did. Remember, to cut anything of length, you will have to have some sort of outfeed rollers, table or stands.
: 2) I know its been asked a million times but whats a good thin kerf blade to
: purchase. I think I remember someone mentioning a decent one from Home
: Depot or Lowes.
There are several good companies that make thin kerf blades which will be fine for what you will be doing with them. Some expensive and some cheaper. I wouldn't worry about getting the expensive ones as you will be doing limited work with it. Home Depot or Lowes or any other Big name hardware store chain usually carries products made from one of the top manufacturers and just put their label on it. Sears uses lots of Delta stuff for example. The prices are right. If you were going to do a lot of work, I would say: go to the more expensive brands.
: 3) We will be replacing our deck after the first of the year and I will have
: approximately twenty 2x5x15' cedar boards from the floor alone not sure of
: the size of the frame pieces. These boards are almost thirty years old and
: look very dark and weathered. if planed, will the wood inside look better.
With the thirty year old cedar it will for sure be dry, but as you say, it will be usable inside. You've probably got yourself a goldmine there. Depends on how frugal the builder was with his nailing. But, even with a load of nails, you should be able to cut around them and still salvage several hundred feet of good usable strips. Even if the wood is dry, leave it out in the open air a while and it will draw moisture to a small degree. If the wood was treated with water seal, you would have to get rid of the outside layer anyway, as the epoxy probably wouldn't adhere too well to the oil-soaked parts.
: * My wife is also getting me a router for christmas. Now I'll need to build a
: router table.
If you can find any old issues of Home and Gardens "Wood" magazine ( or look it up on the net ) they have had some really simple and inexpensive plans for router tables in the past. Other magazines ( woodworking ) have had some also. Good Luck!!
For someone who is not happy with my new hobby, she sure is
: helping me out
