I've got the same saw, it was also given to me as a Christmas present a few years ago. It works fine for cutting strips. I've used it for three kayaks that I have finished and one that I am still working on. I did have to custom make a zero-tolerance blade cutout for it. I'm happy with it, but still dream of a real tablesaw, but for now this one does everything I ask it to.

Just find a good quality thin kerf circular saw blade.

Sounds like a better deal then I got on my wood, $30 worth of clear yellow cedar fencing.
