I think Joe Greenley of Redfish Kayaks was the first to try it.

I used that method to attach 2 layers of 9 oz. tape inside my Guillemot and it worked quite well--no problems with glue blobs. If you have semi-tough fingers, just put a dot on the hull, stick the tape in it, and press it until it cools with your finger. it will lay flat enough that epoxy will fill around it and the dots will be virtually impossible to spot.
