Hear, Hear ... I think you are right on about the Suunto Orca (or its twin, the Pioneer, which is essentially an Orca with a permanently-mounted base ... you get to remove just the compass for security/storage purposes). I actually purchased the Suunto Orca, plus an optional Pioneer base ... so I am able to use the compass either as an "Pioneer" in my own boat (via the mounted base), as well as an "Orca" on a rented/borrowed boat (via bungees)! The folks at Kajak-Sport told me about this neat idea.
