In Response To: Using Radial Arm Saw? (Rick)

Hi Rick;

I ran into this problem earlier this year and came up with a way around it. First of all, ripping small strips from an 8-12" board is absolutely no problem until the board starts to get to the 1-1/2" wide-or-so stage . . .

It will then be flipped up by the blade and start to chatter severely, because you can't get a feather board anywhere near the point of contact. You cannot rip strips from a narrow board safely or accurately in this manner. What I did was to construct what you might view as an "upside down table saw" by simply screwing a 1x2 to the fence, and tightening the fence so that the remaining board could slide through without a great deal of friction. You can view the setup by clicking on the link below, selecting "deck construction," and dropping down to the 7th picture. I was able to rip 3/4" x 1/4" strips in half rather safely with this technique with no chatter or safety issue.

Best Regards, Spidey
