: My general plan is to turn a shoulder on a round blank to fit a hole cut in
: the deck. I will use a gouge to make a round depression and then turn the
: outside round. Did you use anything special for a chuck? I will probably
: turn a plug on the bottom and jam it in a wood faceplate.

I started with a square blank held in a 4 jaw chuck, turned the protruding portion (about 40 mm long) to a diameter of 35mm. I drilled a hole about 25mm deep with an 18mm forstner bit held in the tailstock. I turned the top 8mm to a diameter of 25mm (leaving a 5mm shoulder). I parted the fitting off and drilled a 6mm hole across just below the shoulder and fitted a 6mm stainless rod across the hole in the fitting and glued it in with epoxy.I epoxy coated the fittings before drilling holes 25mm in diameter through the deck with a forstner bit and glueing the fittings in from underneath. I then sanded them flush on top and glassed the deck straight over the top, cutting holes in the glass with a knife when leather hard. All my deck lines and bungies are 6mm and it was a bit of a fiddle gettting them through but a crochet hook did the trick and the result of such small fittings is that they are very unobtrusive. I used different timbers to match the deck pattern where I was placing the fitting.

It took less time to make them than to type this.
