You asked about loom length. The reason the looms are short is because you don't hold it there. You actually hold it where the loom widens into the blade. Some padlers like a very abrupt widining of the loom and some like a subtle gradual widining. The nice thing about this is that you always have a indicator of what your blades are doing which is especially useful for rolling. This an enormous advantage over the feathered paddle. Blade feathering is one of the most difficult challenges that beginning paddlers have when learning to roll.

Most paddlers who switch to a Greenland paddle go through a few before they hone in on a favorite shape and size. It's nice to have friends that use them so you can try some to get a feel for what you like.
