The white residue is caused by using the glue at too cool a temperature. With Titebond II I'm told that this happens anytime the temperature is below 50 degrees. The adhesive turns chalky and white. This does affect the strength so be careful. If you're working in a cool garage you really shouldn't use a Type II adhesive. A standard wood glue won't do this.
