Sanding Boards & Back Pours

I am wondering how you make your sanding fairing boards. I would guess long and flexible, say 1/4 inch plywood with handles? I also want to put an ash doughnut type hole in the stern and bow for ropes by drilling out the strips with 2" dia holes and slipping the doughnuts them in. Then mixing sawdust and epoxy into a paste and making a large packed radius locking them in and also reinforcing the bow and stern at the same time. Does that make any sense? I would do this before I strip the deck.
