The Japanese have a word in their language, "wabi", (pronounced like "hobby")which means, 'a flawed detail that creates an elegant whole'. To most westerners, beauty is represented by the sleek, symmetrical mass-produced perfection that might be associated with a sports car. A highly prized Japanese teacup, on the other hand, might be very simple, somewhat assymetrical and it may not be uncommon to find a crack. The crack is the aesthetic flaw that distinguishes the spirit of the moment in which the object was created from all other moments in time. So if someone has the gall to point out any flaws in your boat, smile knowingly and agree that the boat has wonderful wabi. (It's a lot easier than fixing it.)
