Hi Steve;
Sounds like a dull plane blade to me . . . I have to sharpen mine often, or it will do what yours is doing. Take out your blade, and if the edge is not a danger to your hands, it is dull.
A plane blade must be sharpened after minutes of use, depending on the wood and your aggressive posture (angle/pressure), or it may start to tear. Do the old "figure 8" on your sharpening stone, and it will be ready to go again in short order. I use the "scary sharp" technique, and the extra 5 degree bevel is a quick sharpen for my blades, but you have to keep on top of it.
If you do it right, planing cedar should give you LOTS of cuts before re-sharpening. Ash or similar hard woods are something else . . .
