Try doing a web search on "Scary Sharp." It describes a method of sharpening plane blades using strips of ultra fine sandpaper (600 to 2000 grit) stuck on a piece of plate glass. It puts an ultra fine edge on the blade and is cheap (vs. $40 to $60 each for waterstones...). This method also works well for truing up the bottom of your plane.
