: I've had this urge to build a kayak or canoe from 1/4" honeycomb which
: is stocked by one of the local FG suppliers in 4 x 8 sheets . . . It's
: featherlight (about 1/3 the weight of plywood), would bend more readily
: than plywood, and would serve to use up some of the glass cloth I have
: laying around . . . It may turn out to be a bad (19 lb) idea, but I'd have
: a lot of fun in any event!
This calls to mind something I've wondered about for
awhile: if the essential purpose of the plywood in
a S&G is to present a correct form for the fiberglass,
which provides most of the strength, wouldn't some
kind of expanded plastic--a glorified styrofoam--do
the trick? Wouldn't a really, really light material
with rigidity and fleibility similar plywood allow
enough layers of 'glass to be even superior in
strength/weight? It'd still be possible to use wood
where its strength is needed, like cockpits, hatches
maybe; as long as an adhesive is available that could
bond it to whatever surface is there.
Anyway, what's FG?
