: Controlling the temperature of the plastic across the entire kayak might be
: difficult. Perhaps you can locally heat the panels of plastic as you bend
: them into position, before bonding. This would be analogous to steaming
: wood at the point you want it to bend.
I think a huge oven would do the trick, with slow, steady heating. It would be effective, but building such a temperature-controlled oven probably isn't efficient!!
I'm thinking that the Lexan would handle the stresses of being bent into position, but it wouldn't be a good idea to subject them to cyclical loading, like paddling it in waves. You could then put it in the oven as a whole kayak. I think it could be done--but like I said, not really efficiently.
: For a model boat plexiglas might be cheeper to work with. Also I believe it
: is more scratch resistant.
And more readily available. I'll keep you posted if I start working on one.
: As to how Eddyline does it. I imagine that well engineered vacuum modeling
: would solves some of the problem. Also the carbonlite they use may be less
: prone to stress cracks than Lexan.
Hmm...I never considered that there might be different polycarbonate blends. Quite probably there are--Carbonlite might be engineered for more toughness, Lexan for strength and clarity.
