We have an avid WWI warbird enthusiast here in Champaign-Urbana, IL named Rudy Frasca. He has financed the restoration of and owns and flies several restored warbirds. One of these planes is a spitfire - I have looked at & touched it - it's aluminum. I collected some links you may not have hit. One is to a book review (you can order on Amazon) that would give you good info. Another is to Rudy Frasca's company's site - maybe he would respond to a question about his spitfire (I don't know him personally). The third is to a spitfire site.

: Does anyone know what the (WW II) British Spitfire airplane was constructed
: from? I seem to recall plywood being a component but I couldn't find any
: corroborating evidence after searching Spitfire sites on the Internet.
