After reading the responses to my inquiry, I took a closer look at my joint and decided that it had to go. With the help of a cabinet scraper, razor blade and acetone, I managed to get all of the resin off of the 4 corrupted panels in a few hours.
I wasn't sure that I should do this (or wanted to do it) but as one replier mentioned "the weak joint will fail at the most inconvenient location" I didn't think it was worth an unintended dip in Puget Sound!
I would like to thank everyone for their replies. If I hadn't have heard from you, I would have most certainly proceeded without fixing the joint. Maybe it would have been OK, but then again maybe it wouldn't be.
I am certain that I will have more posts and updates in the future.
