John, my brother-in-law works for a big plastics company back home in wisconsin. he managed to get me a whitewater kayak. it was a blem, it didn't have a seat or any rigging. he knew i wanted to build so he thought he'd get me a boat. i took it, and with his blessing, traded it in at the local kayak shop for the nicest paddle i could get. i read in sea kayaker mag to spend your money on some good clothes, and the best paddle you could afford. then the remainder of your $$ spend on a boat. i also, use the paddle for motivation. it sits in the corner and glares at me every day. i just look at it and think,"...i know...i know..."
