I just finished the final varnish coat on a boat (canoe), and now I'd like to put a name on her stern ("Schweet 16" - she's a 16 footer AND the 16th boat through the shop, AND she's pretty darn sweet, so that name seems a natural)...so I'm thinking of stenciling "Schweet 16" on the stern and then carefully painting in the stencil.

Is paint-over-varnish OK. What kind of paint would be recomemmded?

I also thought I'd then varnish over the paint if that is possible, so the laboriously handpainyted name had some protection. Is that (vanish over paint) OK.
