Hi Mark;
I've been the big promoter of varnishing with a rag, for better or for worse. That is the way I was taught, that is, brushes or rollers are not the way of the woodworker . . . (I use a brush now & again, please don't tell on me).
Rags are really the only way to go for a fine finish, and those that have tried it on this bbs have for the most part loved it. Perhaps a few "rag varnishers" will chime in.
Some info can be found on my web pages, linked below. Essentially, you'll develop a technique, and find that the rag is fastest and produces a great finish more easily than developing the same techniques with a brush . . . not necessarily better, but certainly as good as, and with a more easily acquired technique, with consistent results.
Best Regards, Spidey
