: I think Spideys technique of rag varnishing is akin to the old "French polish". Furniture finishers would use a wool rag tightly wrapped in linen. The wool absorbs the shellac or finish. They make a "tampon" and buff the shellac on the wood. Many coats results in a high gloss finish.
