No other reasons, just to allow the possibility of a paddle float reentry.

If one was absolutely stone set on this lacing pattern, other possibilites would be to 1/have bothe front fittings w/ a hook facing forwards, then just loop over the hook, thereby tightening and crossing the paddle at the 2 sheers or 2/on one set of lines at the ctr of the cross, 2 opposing hooks that are then released and then hooke into the adjacent fitting across the sheer. Some slack here, but hook placement would solve.

Both these are pushing credulity.
