: I laid up the layers of cloth for one of the hatch lips on my guillemot last
: night using the One Ocean method...or a somewhat poor version of it
: anyway, and was wondering about the shape of channel I will end up with.
: My guess is that it will end up with a rounded trough when I am done since
: the cloth didn't really want to make the corner around the gasket tightly.
: Is this going to be a problem? Is a tight channel to gasket fit really
: important or is it just a way of lowering the height of the ledge to
: accomodate the gasket?
: I noticed that Spidey used a fillet of thickened epoxy on either side of the
: sacrifical gasket. Is this what most people do? I didn't read about anyone
: else doing this and decided to try it without.
: I was also wondering about the best way of wetting out 6 layers of cloth. It
: didn't go as smoothly as I pictured, I saturated the first layer pretty
: thick and then laid down the next few layers and dumped on more resin and
: laid the next few etc. I ended up with a lot of the frayed edges stuck to
: everything including me and I just know there has to be a better method,
: it was one of those times I had a good laugh at myself and was glad no one
: was watching.
: Thanks, Ben S.
Ben, I used Vaclav's method with great results. His manual shows using the fillets and I don't think I would like the results without them. I laid up all the layers using bias cut cloth strips that I cut with a fabric cutter (pizza cutter type). If you don't already have one of these cutters, GET ONE!!!
It makes cutting fiberglass a snap. It all but eliminates the loose strands if you bias cut the strips using the fabric cutter.
