1. If you're hitting glass and you still have some shiny spots, stop and apply a coat or two of epoxy to cover the bare glass and build-up the low spots.
2. Even a poor varnish job looks darn good from 6ft away. I've got some sags and a ragged varnish edge between hull and deck on my Guillemot, but you don't see it unless you're really close. You'll be periodically re-varnishing, so you'll get the chance to improve your technique over time. However, if you follow the varnishing suggestions that have been offered on this bbs, you'll be pleased with your first stab at it. Start with a fresh can of varnish (I like Z-spar Flagship). Polybrush disposable foam brushes work well for applying it.
