I'm building the same boat. I'm happy with a wooden beam 2x4,however I like your metal stud idea. What about using the metal channels made for the top and bottom plates in metal stud construction? They don't have the lip that you cut off. I'm guessing that with a 2x4 inside you'd have a ready made center line to eyeball. Like to see new ideas on a theme.
