John,

Yes, I used water-based outdoor urethane, oil-based is less expensive but is more amber. I wanted a clear coat for a translucent white kayak. I haven't had it out too much yet, I finished it in the fall.

Thanks for the compliment, my favorite is the plywood Walrus, but this may become my favorite, after I paddle it some more.

I got the polyester and the canvas locally from Tacoma Tent and Awning. Both were under $6 per linear yard. I get the brass screws a Tacoma Screw for 1/10 of what they cost at a major hardware store or marine supply store. I used cheap western red cedar for the stringers, I just picked through the boards for the best pieces. I ripped and scarfed "tightknot" 2x4s for the first one and 1x6s on the second. I scarfed around most of the knots. If you are really frugal, you could build one of these for under $100, but most people will spend $200 to $250.

Do you want me to narate the book to you, I think I have it memorized. You could also check it out from the library while you are waiting. I have checked out most of the kayak building building books, but then decided I wanted them for my personal library. If I use an idea from a book, I like to buy it to support the author.

When you get to building it there are a few modifications that I would HIGHLY recommend.

Mike

: Mike,

: When you're saying Varathene, is that the same stuff as urethane varnish? If
: it is, how well has it held up for you? Beautiful boats BTW! (ALL of
: them!:) )

: Did you order your fabric from Dyson or find it locally? What price range am
: I looking for, roughly speaking?

: Thanks,
: -John, who's still waiting for his book to arrive......
