Filling with epoxy alone gives you tiny translucent 'windows' which are not very noticeable although they are a bit darker than the surrounding wood. however, they are rather apparent when you lift the boat over your head to put it on the roof rack of your car, or to portage it. The wonder is that with all those "holes" in the hull you don't get in a single drop of water.
Most of my cracks and crevices were in the seams between strips, and in small knot holes. Any difference in coloration that I got from either a mix of sawdust and resin, or just resin alone seemed to just look like a normally occuring variation in grain and wood coloration. I didn't try to match grain or color when I built the boat, so variation was common.
