Oil also prevents water absorbtion which can add greatly to the paddle weight. It is actually possible that your paddle is heavier because of absorbed water and then you trapped it in with the oil.

Water will enter most quickly through exposed end grain. Dipping the tip in epoxy will protect the end and slow down water absobtion. While the epoxy will make the paddle heavier, it might keep it lighter.
