In Response To: airline regs and my greenland paddle? (tom preska)

Tom,

I had to deal with the same problem when I transported two Greenland-style paddles from Florida to Nuuk, Greenland, and back. I was originally told that the paddles must go air freight but I placed them in a 90" long PVC tube and simply handed them to the agent. I was not charged a dime, either domestic or international.

One tip. Simply say that the tube contains "sports equipment". They will probably assume fishing rods, they are often transported in a similar manner. If you specifically say "kayak paddles" some airlines have a computer entry for this and you will likely be told to use air-freight (probably from transporting much bulkier one-piece, wide blade, feathered paddles). In any event, arrive early enough to handle any problems.

One more tip. Glue a foam or wood block onto the PVC tube so that it will not roll. I had the horror of watching twice from my seat on the jet as luggage handlers placed the tube containing my paddles on top of a baggage cart and it started to roll off the roof headed for the tarmac. Fortunately, in each case they managed to catch the tube before it hit the ground.

Expect some interesting tales to tell your friends if you hire a taxi!
