Placing the partial layer underneath you does create a situation that requires more care while sanding, but it's by no means a foregone conclusion that you'll sand through the outer layer at the transition. The problem of sanding through the cloth is something to watch out for anywhere on the hull. This is just another one of them, and the statement you made ealier still applies: if you ever sand down to glass, stop and add epoxy.

I placed a layer of 4oz glass underneath a full layer of 6oz, and after 3 fill coats I can't visually detect the transition at all (actually, I couldn't see it after the initial wet-out). I'll definitely be careful when sanding, and I don't anticipate any problems. But I'll be sure to report any problems if they occur.

Rob, you've definitely got much more experience in this area than most on this board. Have you had personal experience with failure due to order of layers?
