You can, and many people do, use poly sheeting from the hardware store. I Bagged the inside of one kayak hull where I wanted to experiment with stitched biaxial. Hand lay-up of the stuff resulted in a very rough and resin rich lamina. When bagged (with poly sheet from Ace) and with a good fill coat, the resin to glass weight ratio was about 35:65.
I’m glad I gave the biaxial a try, but don’t recommend it. If it was available in lighter weights, it would be OK, but bagging is an unneeded hassle. On kayaks, I’ll stick to woven glass and avoid the need for bagging.
One potential problem is resin starved areas. If too much pressure is applied before the resin gels, too much resin can be forced from the laminate.
