John,
There might be a setting in your software that notes OCR (optical character recognition) which is to scan text into a document from what I know. Maybe you can turn this setting off if thats the case. I have that option on my work computer and when I tried using it strnge things happened. While I'm not sure this is your problem but it a thought.
