I'm having a similar problem here in australia, good timber is hard to find in the quantity that I need. However, over here people have been using cedar and western red cedar in the weather boards on their houses for years, so I'm going to try demolition/second hand timber yards to see if I have any luck. Shit, I'll even try the local garbage dump if it comes to that, last time i took a load there I thought I saw a great stack of lumber just sitting around.

Don't limit yourself to only buying new lumber, as there is tons of second hand stuff to be had, if you hunt it down. Even if it looks old and grey on the outside chances are it'll be sound on the inside. you'll be cutting it into strips anyway.

Oh, and you'll have to get more of it than you need if you want to cut out old nail holes, knots, etc.

It will work out cheaper, but not necessarily easier. Though it does mean you can start hunting down some timber now, rather than waiting around for this guy to come through.
