: I am starting to think about a roof rack to carry my kayak. It looks like it
: could cost $200 and I would still have to customize it somewhat. Has

: wondering is how a roof rack is fastened to a car roof? Is it something
: like a dry wall bolt that springs out when you push it through the drilled

If you have rain gutters, NRS (http://www.nrsweb.com) sells a "Quick-n-Easy" clamping mount you add your own 2 bys to to make a rack. They are $47.50 for a set of 4.
I just got some, added on some 1" pipe insulation layed flat and wrapped it with rubber pipe tape. I had them overnighted, which cost me, so I could make a rack to haul a borrowed kayak to Puerto Penasco, Mexico for a paddle last weekend.
