: hello everyone,
: we'll after staining our bathtub with walnut strips, burning myself with a
: steamer that i threw together with junk i found in my garage, and driving
: myself almost over the edge trying to get eight strips of epoxy covered
: wood to cooperate with my wishes....presto! a coaming. it wasn't that bad,
: and, it wasn't that easy either. all in all, i'm glad its over, and i'm
: glad it looks so good. after soaking the walnut overnight in my tub
: (anyone know how to remove walnut stains on my white bath tub? i've tried
: everything.) i stuck the strips along with the bass wood into a shop vac
: hose and put it over a gas can filled with water. i then boiled the water
: with a blowtorch....which i can't remember ever buying, but i had none the
: less. watch the nose hair when lighting....whoooaaa. i set a jig on the
: deck (screwed and hot melt glue)which was roughly configured to the shape
: i needed from the template on my plans. i then clamped down the then
: floppy strips of wood with spring clamps. i let them dry for two days then
: took them apart and applied a liberal amount of epoxy. ever notice epoxy
: has a way of getting everywhere, and on everything? yeesch. well, the
: final result is the photo below. i intend to add two more rings to the
: outside so my lip is a healthy 5/8", and one more band of basswood to
: the inside; this will cover the remaining band of plywood not covered by
: the coaming which is sitting on top of the deck.
: build on,

Hi Brett,

I really enjoyed your pictures and your progress with your kayak. I wish I was that far along since spring is just aournd the corner. Please keep posting your progress on your combing and describing it. I have not decided how I will build my yet and I may want to copy you.

As far as stains go, use lemmon juice and it will come right off. You can buy it in a bottle if you don't want to squeeze them. I use to work with Mahogany and at the end of the day you hands look like they were sun tanned or had been in s@@?. When my wife was away one week end I steamed a walnut strip in the kitchen to see how it would work in my steamer and some of the steam walnut colored water got on the floor and I decided I had better move that operation to the garage before she got back.
Take care,

John
