I suppose this would work, but what if the wind is calm when you put in and it picks up while you're out? Wet exit and install the skeg? IMO a better solution is to find compromise between tracking and manueverability, stick it on and leave it there. During the experimentation phase you can temporarily install the skeg with caulk, remove and replace or trim it at your whim, and only glass it on when you're satisfied. No moving parts, little extra weight, nothing to jam in the sand and pebbles, no holes in the hull, and very little cost. Does it get any better than that?
