In Response To: canoe seat caning advice (Mike Snell)
: I would like to know if there is anything that needs to be brushed on a caned
: canoe seat to keep it from going bad after it is installed in a canoe. I
: used natural cane so I would assume there is some need to protect it from
: the elements. Thanks
Mike,
I built an cedar strip Adirondack guide boat about 15 years ago with natural cane seats. It has been stored outside in the shade upside down for the last 8 or 9 years. The cane is still fine; it stretches a bit when wet, but tightens up when it dries. I don't think I would varnish it, if it cracked i don't know how it could be refinished.
