: hi Scott, after seeing some marginally installed recessed fittings in a
: friends glass P&H Sirius I'm guessing most of us are building pretty
: sturdy kayaks. On a prototype I used t-nuts glued in with (4) 2"
: strips of 11oz. unidirectional carbon tape with the t-nut protruding
: through the three arrayed strips and one strip between nut and hull. The
: prongs were cut off. This was for a boat where I wanted all the room I
: could get.
Sounds sturdy, but would require larger holes in the racks, I'd guess, to compensate for the nuts' not being at 90 degrees to the racks, due to hull curvature. I'm working on a Shooting Star now, and will try cutting mounting discs from a layer or two of okoume ply instead of the Baltic I used in the Tern, which has a larger cockpit and could easily lose an inch of width between the pegs without your noticing it.
