Denatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol (the edible type of alcohol found in beer, etc.) that has been made unfit for consumption by adding a chemical such as methanol, camphor, benzene, or kerosene. In my experience it is very common on drug store shelves, along with rubbing alcohol (iso-propyl alcohol). Since it is not being marketed for consumption, it has been denatured in order to avoid the severe taxation applied to beer, wine, and spirits.
