Bob, a skeg isn't necessary. While increasing the load in a kayak makes the forces of the water a greater factor than wind regarding weathercocking (thereby reducing the speed with which the bow may want to point into the wind) it still doesn't change the shape of the hull. The chesapeake is very tunable with a skeg but I wouldn't bother installing one until you have paddled it a lot.
